In the Community: Kids Model Making for a Cause

On April 4th, Delaware Valley Habitat for Humanity hosted the Eighth Annual “Build a House…Build a Dream! Contest for Kids” which took place at Drexel University. Fifth grade children from six regional counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Philadelphia, and Camden) were invited to build a model of their “dream home” and have it considered by a panel of judges. This fundraising event is a fun day for the kids, their families, the judges and supporters of the cause.
More than 400 children representing over 250 houses participated this year and our own Barry Lehr, expert model maker and account manager, served proudly as a judge. It was difficult to judge the many creative and well-executed models. Barry saw houses that incorporated unconventional materials, spoke about ecological concerns and expressed truly fanciful vision of the individual child’s “dream house”. He was continually impressed by the children’s engagement with the project.
The event raised over $100,000 in cash and in-kind support to help low income families build their own new homes in the Delaware Valley. USA was proud to contribute as a judge and sponsor to this excellent cause.
