Space Science Institute Mars Lander

Looking for life? Look for water! In August 2007, NASA launched its Mars Lander vehicle as part of the Phoenix Mars mission to solve the mystery of water on the Red Planet. USA collaborated with the Space Science Institute, a non-profit corporation formed to create an environment where scientific research and education programs can flourish, to produce a half-scale Phoenix Lander model with a working “digger arm”.

FULLY ARTICULATED MODELS

A NASA produced animated video of the Phoenix Lander attracts visitors to the Lander Control Panel where they try their hand at digging in the Martian soil using the joystick-controlled digger arm. After achieving a successful scoop, these young scientists are prompted to choose one of four experiments that the Lander performs. The automated digger arm deposits the scooped samples to one of the experiment stations where it is “analyzed”, and the results displayed on an LCD monitor located on the exhibit Control Panel.
